English Abstract: Gender-coaching with male management personnel
Peter F. Jedlicka, sociologist and gender coach in Vienna, Austria, describes two forms of approaches towards gender mainstreaming for men in leading positions and gives his definition of “Gender Coaching”, as an individual support ( for single persons or for teams ) in the field of gender training
While some managers – mostly in pulblic or social services - face the obligation to implement a gender mainstreaming strategy because of a general ( “state” ) policy in their sectors, others come across the necessity “to do something” because of complaints of ( mostly female ) employees about bad working conditions ( often: due to career barriers for women or incompatibility with their family lives) – or, even more aggravated: because of complaints of the customers about his staff.
For most men in these situations, “implicit gender coaching” can help: This means, that the goal to implement new gender mainstreaming strategies was not “defined” at the beginning of a coaching process: The gender-coach who is capable of analyzing gender aspects in all possible dimensions of a working environment will lead the process towards the gender topic continuously.
By “explicit gender coaching” the author understands a “usual” coaching process with the expressed goal of implementing a ( new ) gender mainstreaming strategy. From his experience only women will choose this form of coaching, because men avoid seeking for professional help on a topic where obviously many women are experts.
